Here’s how to do it:

1. Turn off the water to the toilet at the shutoff valve, usually located under the tank on the left side. Flush the toilet several times until no water remains in the tank; this will give you time to look for leaks without getting soaked.
2. Remove the tank lid and set it aside. Locate the flapper at the bottom of the tank; it’s round and has a chain attached to one side. Remove any clips that hold it in place, or release any retaining rings that attach it to overflow tubes or flush levers.
3. Inspect both ends of the flapper for mineral deposits or other buildup and clean them if necessary using white vinegar, a toothbrush, and/or an old toothbrush. If you’re replacing a flapper due to age (usually about five years), consider installing a new fill valve as well since these often fail around the same time as flappers. While you’ve got everything apart, inspect all parts for damage and replace anything that’s cracked or worn with an exact replacement part from your home store or hardware store.
4. Install your new flapper by reversing the removal steps. If you’re replacing a fill valve, reattach it to the bottom of the tank and then install the flapper. Close the tank lid and test it by pressing down on the handle. The toilet should flush properly.
